Searching for Pancho
Architect, painter, sculptor, artist, portuguese, mozambican, whatever. A little of everything. Amancio d'Alpoim Miranda Guedes aka Pancho Guedes, was born in Portugal in 1925 but it was in Africa that he left the vast majority of his work. In South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Angola but especially in Mozambique, where one can find numerous works. Most of them built in the 1950s and the 1960s in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo.
One of his most emblematic works, the residential building "O Leão que Ri" (transl. "The Lion Who Laughs"), 1956 , in Maputo , shows all his creative genius. I'm writing about it because of this video from Christopher Bisset titled "A Procura de Pancho" (transl. "The Search for Pancho"). A very well done mini documentary, where the south african student travels in Maputo in search of Pancho Guedes' work . A journey through the work of a single architect who has an equally singular work. One can breathe Maputo in every corner of the film...
